    So, uh...

    November 15, 2018 by Thantosiet

How bad would it be if I gave up on the Mermaid Hunter thing? Because I'm feeling really torn. On the one hand I feel like I've already committed to a bunch of you guys and it's cheating to just quit. On the other I just...don't watch mermaid shows for fun anymore. I can't shake the feeling that I should be prepping for my next review. Plus I hate leaving everyone hanging for literally months on end waiting for a video that frankly isn't good enough for that wait. Of course, I could fix that by making videos more often. I mean, in terms of actual labor it takes me a couple of days to make a video. I can make excuses but ultimately I do have time to make videos, and on a much quicker schedule than I currently do, I just...don't want to. The…

    Animated Mermaid Series

    September 24, 2018 by Legaha3000

I've been thinking about creating my own animated series for a while, now that I've come to grips  with how I won't ever be able to make a live-action mermaid show.  I'd attempted an animated mermaid series a few years ago, armed only with the tools of MS Paint and my laptops trusty mouse pad and you can see the results of those were quite horrific

But since then I've gotten better at my art with diligent practice over the years and I'm a little more confident in my abilities. Hopefully, I'll be able to bring up enough motivation to start working on a project soon.

    Oops.

Anywho, I had kinda lost a lot of my interest in Beyond the Waves recently. One of the reasons I had stuck around with it was out of nostalgia and my rad ideas for future seasons (GODS i still love my plotline for the runaway/abandon thing but i mean), but it was definitely leaning towards a nostalgia factor.

However, I know if I quit on mermaid shows in general I will regret it. I still have a lot of passion for the community and I miss what it used to be before becoming a little more mainstream (I quite frankly miss when Fin Fun Mermaid tails didn't immediately remind me of Disney princess challenge videos, mermaid slime clickbait content, all that annoying jazz).

I have plenty of mermaid show ideas, but I don't want them to get toss…

I apologize in advance for the poorly-structured nature of this blog post. It's late, and I should be asleep.

I rewrote the Mystery Magic pilot recently because I couldn't find the older version in my Google Drive. I assumed this was because I co-authored the document, and my co-creator no longer shows any interest in continuing it. She never really told me she quit, though. I didn't know if she deleted what we'd previously worked on.

This was probably for the better, anyway. I was rather attached to some scenes in the previously pilot that slowed down the pacing. It took me months to get eight pages completed on the old document. In contrast, I finished ten pages of the new version in two days. I'm also more satisfied with the newer script.…

    Favorite Characters

    February 7, 2018 by Misque

Despite the prevalence of cliché, cookie-cutter protagonists in mermaid shows, some characters stick with the audience in a resonating way. I'm drafting a video about the consistencies my favorite characters in these series share; and I would appreciate your input.

Who are your favorite characters? Why are they more distinct than others? Do you think they match the quality of the show's plot, or do they surpass it? What is this character's role? Are they a hero, villain, or somewhere in between? If you're a creator (involved in a show, or planning to be) which character is your favorite to write or perform as? Better yet, would you like an open ended conversation about any character? I'd enjoy talking about any of the characters I've w… Read more >

    It might actually happen!

    December 23, 2017 by Misque

I've been gathering my ideas regarding mermaid-related content, which I'll probably post on the Mystery Magic channel; making a new channel has been more difficult than I expected. I've come up with some video topics. Tell me if you have any comments or suggestions. So far, I've thought of:

    -Welcome to Youtube Mermaid Shows

-Why Winter is the Perfect Time to Watch Mermaid Shows

    -My Favorite Mermaid Books

    - Are tails really that expensive? (skit)

-My Favorite Characters in Mermaid Shows

-Why 'Splash' is More Important than You Think

-How many mermaid princesses are there? (skit)

    -Top Ten Favorite Mermaid Tropes

-Mermaid Tropes I have a Love-Hate Relationship With (It's Complicated)

-Unhealthy Mermaid Habits (This will probably be a series.)

    Is this a good idea?

    November 22, 2017 by Misque

Due to some circumstances with the cast, the actual filming of my show has been put off for longer than I would like. Despite this, I'm pretty ready to start filming something mer-related. My braces are coming off fairly soon, so most hesitations I had regarding showing my face online are handled. I didn't know what to do at first, (other than shameless self-promotion) then I remembered these Polyvore sets I made a while ago. Would anyone be interested in a series that parodies mermaid tropes, tells about news in the community (such as new shows or tails), makes top ten lists, or collaborates with shows? Do any of you have suggestions about its format or how I would go about making a show like this? Would anyone be open for collaboration? …

    Another Blog Post

    September 18, 2017 by Misque

This will probably be fairly short, but I'm on an in-show world-building streak today. I chipped away at getting the movie script done and started writing a script for an episode. Basically: I was actually productive today.

I also was chosen to have a picture of Morgayn drawn.

The artist is Jessica Moorman, and I think she did a great job. It's almost completely accurate, and her style is very cute, in my opinion.

Wishing you all a pleasant existence,

One thing that I often find odd and strangely consistent throughout most mermaid shows is the lack of parental involvement. I'm not just talking about keeping your tail a secret from them, either. Why does no one have parents that intervene when they dash out the door for an impromptu swim session? How about when they invite someone they barely know over for a full moon sleepover? This doesn't only apply to parents in the strict sense. Aunts, uncles, grandparents, older siblings and more would realistically set up boundaries for any child they were responsible for. I know a lot of shows don't feel like including any actual adults is a possibility, and I applaud those that do involve the older people in their lives. These shows often feel m…

    Eclipse Events

    August 21, 2017 by Misque

Today's solar eclipse personally blew me away. I hope you all stayed safe and kept your eyes well protected. Did anyone take advantage of the event mermaid show wise? I know that most eclipses are lunar, but this one dealt with the moon, too. Did it inspire you to do anything with your show? Did the eclipse live up to your expectations? Did you travel to see it in a better area? Bill Nye (the science guy) traveled to my state, so I was pretty hyped. I hope you had a good Eclipse Day,

There are tons and tons of shows that reference Mako Island either in the title or in the series. The reason is obvious: It's the magical location from H2O, the show that inspired most of these YouTube series. There's an immediate association with magic and mermaids--not to mention a higher possibility of searches running across your show if you use that kind of keyword. There is, however, a catch, something that I think most of these girls haven't thought about.

Why is it called Mako Island?

This is a Mako shark. The name comes from the Maori word Mako, which means either "shark" or "shark tooth." So, Sharky McSharkface. Anyway, it was a plot point in Season 2 that Mako Island is within spitting distance of a shark breeding ground--Cleo wen…

I've been listening to Florence + the Machine songs a lot lately, and gosh, I feel like crying from all the nostalgia she brings me. Secret Life of a Mermaid introduced me to her music , and I swear, when I close my eyes while listening to Swimming, I'm back on the old carpeted floor of my bedroom all those years ago, watching the newest ep of SLM, squealing when it's over and telling my mom everything that happened in the episode, of Blaire and her squirrels, Brenna's power-led rampages, Tess's drama, Amy's conversation with stuffed animals, Kelsey's love for school. I go back in time to when I tried to make my own intro to 'Swimming' before I even started an actual show, filmed with a laptop webcam that was  pretty much the quality of wh…

    Suggestions?

    June 9, 2017 by Artsygirl5858

So, I just finished binge-watching every episode, blooper reel, and BTS from Secret Life of a Mermaid (including the 'Lost Episode'!) for the 80th time in my life, and guess what?

I almost managed to not cry at the end this time!

Aren't I so good at not getting attached?

    Yeah right.

Anywho, I was wondering if any of you knew any shows like that I could watch? I know lots of mermaid shows, but none with the distinct flair SLM has, like the ridiculously hilarious quotes that don't seem forced, and those goofy scenes where they almost break the fourth wall or other impossible things (Amy and Kelsey breaking out into song while music plays from out of nowhere, Amy's stuffed animals magically disappearing while shes talking to them, Bill the Ball s…

    WOW.

Today I decided to check my notifications on here and I noticed something- my show is the Featured Series of the Month!

Thank you so so so much! I just ran out of my room and started dancing around the house, I am so happy about this!

I am working so hard right now on my show, its such a relief school is over but my summers are extremely busy also. I accidentally left my camera at a friend's house, but as soon as I can get it back I'll be filming again! My friend, M&M, who is going to portray Natalie Teagan, will be coming over soon so we will be able to get episode 8 up. I'm excited to be introducing a new character and a bigger, more complex plotline!

Thank you once again for my series being featured!

I know this is too short to be considered a normal blog post but has anyone else noticed black tails with Fin-Fun scale prints that don't have normal fins? They are popping up on mermaid shows like Tale of Tails by autumnnicolex and I'm confused. It looks like someone got a FinFun Barracuda Black tailskin, ripped off the printed fin, and added plain black fabric in the same shape, then stuck a FinFun monofin in it. I don't know if they're cheap ripoffs or...?

EDIT: Nevermind! I can't figure out how to delete this post. BUT the tails aren't FinFun print, they're actually super duper different, its just hard to tell in the particular scenes I saw. Sorry!

Most mermaid shows feature powers, or special abilities. For one thing, they spice up boring montages. They can also make way for epic battle scenes, because its easier to say someone has magical powers than to explain how a young kid can decently use a knife, bow, or their fists.

Unfortunately, powers take away from shows too. Instead of an intense, suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse with a villian, the character can just freeze them in their tracks. Instead of craftily avoiding water using wit and creativity, the character can just divert or evaporate it.

So how do you balance the awesomeness of powers with the entertaining challenges of not having them?

    You limit them!

You can limit them with side effects, for one. For example, maybe if your…

I have an idea for a mermaid show called Ocean Whispers, and I will probably never be able to make it. So if you are interested in using the script, please contact me! I will post more info on it soon.

Here's the description for the show:

While the Second Mystic Prophecy echoes throughout the sea, two mermaids travel to the mainland to investigate a girl named CJ, who is mysteriously connected to a whimsical fairytale that may just be more fact than fiction.

By the way, for a reference on how to properly format the script, I used this: https://www.scripted.com/writers/write-stellar-short-video-script-2

Ever since I was 7 years old, or maybe younger, I wanted to make a mermaid show.

Remember when mermaid shows were almost all the same plotline? Remember when teenie989 was our hero? Remember when pianopup210 and other mermaid shows changed the game, making plotlines more diverse?

    Ah, yes. Nostalgic.

Nowadays, the classic 'normal girl turned mermaid then scientists show up' is still the dominating trope, but there are many more shows with potions and spells and bloodlines and ancestors and such than there used to be.

The storyline for my show, Beyond the Waves, was created years ago in the mind of an 8 or 9 year-old girl. She had... different ideas than I do now. But the heart of it was still the same.

Now, I'm worried asking this with too many de…

    Wait a Second..

    January 21, 2017 by Misque

Hydrokinesis is definitely one of the most popular mermaid powers out there. Though its basis and abilities are pretty easy to understand, something has been bothering me.

Most shows trigger transformations when the characters come in contact with water. This rule also applies to merfolk with control over water. When they (inevitably) get splashed by a clumsy friend, water-gun war, or their own carelessness, these characters panic and *pop*. They expose themselves or suspiciously run off in front of their friends or family. HOLD THE SHELL PHONE!
If these characters have already learned how to control their powers, couldn't they just make the water float above where it would have splashed? So they wouldn't have to keep a co… Read more >

So I've been watching Tales from the Crypt, and it reminded me of an idea I've had for a while. I think it'd be really cool to have a mermaid anthology series, with each episode as its own short story. You could have different people create and submit episodes to the show, and thus if one group of people were busy, the show wouldn't have to go on hiatus, it could just use someone else's episodes for a while. Plus since each cast would only have to worry about a single episode, they could put all of their effort into making it really good.

I think this could be a good chance to tell some of the really interesting stories that a lot of shows throw into their backstories. Mermaids from the past, wars between Sirens and mermaids, how magical trea…

I've watched this movie at least four times, and it still doesn't appeal to me. There, I said it.

I won't give too much away for the people who haven't seen it, but don't go into this movie expecting to see what the trailer gives you. I can sum up the issues of this movie with several points:

-The movie does not explain anything from the original series, other than the fact that they have tails and their antagonist, Faith, is supposed to be dead, but isn't. This was not a good idea, because some people won't know that the series exists.

-Characters come and go. Someone will be introduced and never mentioned again, making it seem like the girls just wanted as many of their friends to be in this as possible.

    -The classic 'kidnapped by scientis…

    Ideas?

    June 10, 2016 by Misque

Alright, the second I created this blog post, I thought that maybe it should be in some other form. So, if someone tells me I have to put it somewhere else (a forum, etc.), then I'll happily oblige.

    ONTO THE TOPIC:

Does anyone have any show recommendations for me? I'm looking for a show that isn't too heavy on plot, possibly thrown together all in one day. Quality tails would be nice, but I really don't mind. I'm basically just looking for a show where a bunch of girls tape themselves roleplaying as mermaids. The show can be cancelled or abandoned, but since I plan on watching these shows, it would help if they weren't deleted. It's a kind of odd request, but I'm going to be having a BUSY week, and these types of shows serve as my therapy.

    Tone

    May 29, 2016 by Misque

(I almost put Tone Quality for the title of this post. My inner band nerd is oozing out.) I have yet another production problem ladies and gentleman. I was watching The Mermaid Hunt the other day, (I won't say on which show) and it brought up a problem I never realized my in production show had: tone. A script for one episode will deal with death or being emotionally numbed and drained, while another episode that's supposed to be happening at the same time, but different place, is goofy and light-hearted. I did this to kind of give the audience a break from plot heavy stories by giving them some dramatic downtime, but I don't want the tone of my show to be confusing. My question is: How do I give the audience a good balance of action and s…

One of my characters in Mystery Magic,(Morgayn), can't remember her early childhood. I don't want other characters (or viewers) to victimize her, or assume that she can't do anything on her own. Any suggestions on how not to victimize her? Another thing on my mind, in my show, some of the characters go along with Hans Christian Anderson idea that mers live to be 300 years old. I also want the characters to age with the actors, so is the best plan to only mention the expanded lifespans, or to do a sequel down the road? Thanks for your input.

This is gonna be on the rambly side, because I don't have any clear ideas, just a lot of different possibilities.

Okay, so the Mermaid Council is a fixture of a lot of mermaid shows. It's usually this distant entity with a bunch of mysterious figures who either give the mermaid main characters help, tests or punishments. They're usually represented by one person in a cloak. Since they act pretty similarly across the board, I'd like to see a little more connection between different shows.

So first off I think the Council needs a uniform. I did some doodling and I think a vest-type garment and maybe bracelets would be good, with insignias to represent all of the jobs the Council members do. It's something that can be worn over normal clothing,…

We know how every show goes: one or more girls find something magical, pops a tail, have friends that find out about it, get some scientist/demon/other-worldly being that wants something from them, et cetera. But how about shows that don't follow this formula? Say, showing more violence and putting the characters' lives at risk, rather than their powers?

The list of more mature, PG/PG-13 style shows is unfortunately small. Mostly because a) the majority of these shows are made by younger girls/boys, and b) they may not be able to take on such a big challenge. But for older creators, such as myself, why not give the show a darker tone?

On a personal note, one of my fears about creating a story-driven, dramatic, and overall mature series is e…

Okay. Here is my shot at mermaid reviews. I've been watching Mermaid Hunter for a little over a year now, and I thought it would be cool to try doing one of my own. This is not to be confused with copying, for I'm doing it in text form, and I will be focusing on lesser known shows, or my personal favorites. Which brings us to Secret of The Sea, which falls in to both catagories.

    GENERAL OVERVIEW-

Secret of The Sea follows the lives of sisters Paige, Summer, and their older sister Blair, as they tackle a family curse which causes them to transform into mermaids when the come in contact with water. What makes the show great is its reletively unique premise. There aren't any swimming scenes, for it seems like the creators do not have access to …

    A THING TO NOTE:

Your theme is yours, these are just some tips to make things smoother, but keep in mind, the theme is probably the first thing a viewer will see. Constantly changing your theme will make each episode seem inconsistant and jarring, but if that is the look you desire, go right ahead. Also, I am not a film professional, but I HAVE spent over 4 years on YouTube. Okay. :)

    GENERAL TIPS:

    Flop!

    March 26, 2016 by Misque

As I was sitting in my creative space working on scripts, I realized something: I need to learn how to fake fall. I know how to faint, but that's more like the consciousness being drained slowly from the character, so it makes sense if they safely drop to their knees first. I'll also be using this for a low-budget historical fiction movie my cast is making about the Holocaust, so a non-mermaid technique will be appreciated as well.

on a side note: I find it kind of awkward that when my production squad meets up, we'll go from talking about mermaids to how to portray a giant massacre. The two films are as far apart in tone as they can get.

Among the shorts (that are about the same length of the episodes, but have a self-contained story, rather than an over-arching plot),two shorts serve as subseries; usually carried on by only the titular character. The other subseries is Morgayn's Mermaid Mythology Corner; where Morgayn educates the watcher on mermaid history, politics and culture. Most people in my school know about my affinity for fish-people. They usually fall in three categories.

Category A: People who give me a hard time or tease me due to my fandoms.

    B: People who accept me.

Recently, all three categories have alerted me that on the Disney Channel, there's this new show called Mako Mermaids, from the same people who made H2o (a series that inspired many others) Apparently it's a hit with the same age group a H2O was popular with. I smell a new generation of youtube mermaid series......

Edit: Apparently, I invented a new word: Inswpiration. I'm going to try to use it in my daily vocabulary.

    Tail Bias

    January 28, 2016 by Misque

Note: This is NOT a rant

Before I begin, a little story,

Once upon a time, a little girl who will go by the name of Misque discovered mermaid shows. If the show had a fabric tail, she would watch it, but she preferred shows with silicone tails ( which are extremely hard to find). This picky Misque person wouldn't even give shows with homemade tails a chance.

The End (Not of this blog post, just the story)

Now that I have my own tail, I realize how expensive a fabric tail actually IS. But looking back, I don't think younger me would be impressed with my tail. Are there people that are that are that picky now? Further more: what's the youngest you've ever heard of someone watching mermaid shows? Just to know how broad my target audience is.

    Prequel Problems

    January 23, 2016 by Misque

I have a little dilemma here. Okay, so first let me explain. In my show, Mystery Magic, the layout is like this: there will be short episodes first, but they will take place after the events of the "movie" a longer prequel that will follow. I did this because most of the short episodes will mainly involve Morgayn (me) and Elise (Sadee). The others still need to fundraise for their tails. So, the problem is, how do I keep from slipping in the prequel and talking about something that was supposed to happen after that, as well as continuity. You people are usually very helpful so I thought I'd ask you for help.

I've noticed that in most mermaid shows, the mers were created by means of a moonpool. I know this is probably because a lot of people got into mermaids via H2o: Just Add Water, so this probably explains it. But I've only watched six episodes of H2o, and when I go to Youtube to watch original series, I kind of expect them to be original. I don't know, that's why every merperson in Mystery Magic is natural born. That's just more appealing to me. Anyone else?

    Blog Posts

    December 30, 2015 by Misque

I've noticed there are no recent blog posts. So I'm fixing that now. I would want to discuss things via chat, but nobody is ever on when I'm on. So blow up the comments of this post with mermaid stuff, if you please! :)

    Songwriting tips?

    December 13, 2015 by WritingxAddict

So, music has always been an important aspect for the films I've attempted in the past. I've composed a few small songs before, but recently I've been having trouble with a small project for one of the first episodes of my show. The scene is pretty straightforward: the mermaid character tries out her new siren-like abilites and lures someone down to the beach (there's more to the episode than that, but I'm not going to give it away). Basically, I need tips for writing a dark, horror-esque song for her to sing. I thought about basing it off of an old sea chanty, but a friend of mine said he'd prefer something original. Not to mention the lyrics I came up with before seemed a little...generic.

If anyone would like to give me ideas for what t…

"Should Magic Be a Priority in a Mermaid Show?"

I notice the majority of mermaid shows feature magic as a nesscessity in order to do prettty much anything.        But,as a Christian I dont really want to include that element in my show.

    Is ther anyway around this?

Every time I try to get my actors on track for filming my Mermaid show , No one ever wants to work. And by no one I mean my sister, she's the only actress I have and she is Impossible to work with. I usually throw my hands up in frustration and ditch the project all together.

Has any one else had this problem? does anyone know how to fix it?
